Rediscovering QC Attractions
BY: Cornelio R. De Guzman
Quezon City is expected to find a permanent place in the country’s tourism map as civic leaders in coordination with Mayor Sonny Belmonte start to put together the city’s varied attractions into travel packages.
With “Must See QC” as its theme, the Quezon City Tourism Council, an NGO headed by former Tourism secretary Narz Lim, Mayor Belmonte and the city council will convert “the richest city in the Philippines” as a prime tourist destination.
Belmonte said many things going on in QC that have not been publicized or given emphasis are ----
- QC qualifies as entertainment area which during the past was popularly known as the “City of Stars” because it plays host to ABSCBN, GMA 7, ABC 5, PTV 4, RPN 9, IBC 13: performing arts and symphonic band, the Quezon Boulevard entertainment strip is also widely known.
- It also qualifies as Centers of Learning. Philippine Science High School, University of the Philippines; UP-Asian Institute of tourism, Ateneo de Manila University and Miriam College.
- QC has long been a dining destination with rows upon rows of restaurants along Tomas Morato, West and East Avenues, Katipunan, Libis area and around the ABS-CBN compound.
Araneta Center’s recent face-lift has transformed it into a more customer-friendly and environmentally-enhanced urban environment, containing all the attractions of shopping, eating and entertainment that this part of Quezon City is famous for. On the other hand, Eastwood is a well-planned complex of buildings incorporating the best of city living in a limited area, with restaurants, entertainment outlets, movie houses, shopping, residential and condominiums and offices in a park-like ambience. After dark, the venue is transformed into an outdoor fiesta of sidewalk cafes and mini tiangges and strolling space.
- Quezon City has long been a shopping destination with the presence of Robinson’s Plaza in Fairview; SM North Edsa; SM Centerpoint and malls around Araneta Center, like the newly opened Gateway Mall.
- QC Chamber of Industries is pushing to make the city medical tourism and wellness center because large hospitals like the Heart Center of the Philippines, Kidney Center of the Philippines, St. Luke’s Hospital, De Los Santos Hospital, West Avenue General Hospital and Lung Center of the Philippines, and the New Medical City are located in QC.
- President Arroyo has recently declared QC as an Information and Communication Technology Capital of the Philippines because of the many call centers in the City particularly in Rodriguez Avenue, Novaliches, Eastwood City and Araneta.
- Also, Quezon City being in the lungs of the Metropolis, is an eco-tourism destination with nature reserves like the Ninoy Aquino Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, Balara Park, La Mesa Ecopark. La Mesa Park features a nature park to serve as a living classroom for environmental education and interpretation, and showcase good environmental practice. The park has a playground and picnic area, swimming pools, orchidarium, pavilions, boating lagoon and fishing wharf.
- QC is also a center for spirituality with the following famous churches: Sto. Domingo Church; Cathedral Shrine of the Good Shepherd; and San Pedro Bautista Church, second oldest church in the Philippines.
- Historical monuments and shrines include Quezon Memorial Shrine Museum, Bantayog ng Mga Bayani, People Power Monument, Edsa Shrine, Sigaw ng Pugad and Lawin Shrine.
Belmonte recalled that from less than one million population of Quezon City in the late 70’s or early 80’s, the city’s population ballooned to more than two million when thousands of provincianos migrated to the city as part of the world-wide phenomenon.
“The biggest thing with us now us now is the North and East Triangles which have been long neglected. Consisting of of 2,200 hectares plus the 60 hectares of Veterans Hospital property, we will convert this area into the Central Business District of QC.
He said the map shows that the two triangles are located in the center of Metro Manila. “But we will not develop it at the expense of the people. We will look for ways to make former settlers also the winners,” he added.
He said the development of the area has actually started with the construction of an immense shopping destination in front of the SM North Edsa by the Ayalas.
Another project the city is pushing through the initiative of the Chinese community is the conversion of Banawe, the city’s car parts and dining district, into a Chinatown of QC with Chinese motif. A city ordinance has already been approved to carry out the grand plan.

RP's Silicon Valley soon to rise in QC
RP’s Silicon Valley soon to rise in QC
The famous Silicon Valley in California will soon be replicated in Quezon City.
The University of the Philippines has partnered with Ayala Land Inc. for the development of the site, which is expected to further reinforce the status of the university as the country’s premier educational institution.
The contract for the development of the new science and technology park at a UP property along Commonwealth Avenue in Diliman has been signed.
Companies that are expected to set-up offices at the park include firms in high-technology fields like telecommunications, telematics and biotechnology, and high-value business process outsourcing such as accounting, animation, software development, design and engineering services.
Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., who was present during the recent contract signing, expressed optimism that the project would further strengthen the thrust of the city government toward becoming the country’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capital.
To date, Quezon City enjoys the highest concentration of ICT buildings and special economic zones in the country. It is home to more than 60 BPO companies, including Convergy’s, eTelecare International, Teletech, Sykes Philippines, Accenture and Globalstride, Sitel Corp., Call Asia, Epixtar International, among others.
“The project promises to become a magnet for fast-evolving high-technology companies that would prove essential for the creation of a strong business and employment center in QC, enough to provide more employment opportunities for its residents, “Belmonte said.
Some 37 hectares of UP’s Commonwealth property have been identified as the initial area for the project.
“This is the best possible use for our idle assets. It will expand our academic prerogatives and help us fulfill our mandate of being truly a national university, serving the interests of the nation, “said UP President Emerlinda Roman during the ceremonial contract signing held at the UP Executive House. The idea of a S&T park attached to a university is no longer new. World-class universities have set up Science & Technology Parks adjacent to their campuses as a venue for collaboration between the industry and the academe.
Aside from Stanford University’s Silicon Valley in Palo Alto, California, there are S&T parks in Bangalore and Hyderabad in India attached to the Indian Institute of Science and the International Indian Technology, respectively. There is also the Tsukuba Science City at the University of Tsukuba in Japan, the Haidan Science Park at the University of Beijing in China, and MIT’s Route 128 in Massachusetts.
